What's the Difference Between Quartz and Granite Countertops

Quartz and granite are natural materials that are removed from the earth in blocks which are then cut into slabs. Granite is unaltered and quartz is mixed with other materials and pigments for a look that can be altered to a certain degree. NATURAL VS. ENGINEERED Granite is taken from the ground and polished, and then delivered in its natural state. Quartz is created through an engineering process that mixes the quartz crystals with resin and pigments which alter the coloration of the material. These engineering adjustments amount to approximately a 5% - 7% change to the end product. GRANITE As granite is 100% natural, it is completely unaltered and natural, and will be an attractive choice for those looking for an absolutely unique product that contains flaws and markings that give the finished product a visually interesting factor that many find desirable. The rich and very strongly visible veins and other markings, can offer some challenges in matching slabs, and any seams will remain noticeable. Granite is also porous and requires a protective sealant to be applied at install, a process that will need to be repeated each year. QUARTZ The main feature that brings many to choose quartz is its durability as it is one of the strongest materials available. Countertops will be somewhat stain resistant and will not require a sealant as, unlike granite, quartz is not a porous material. Seams will be noticeable where two slabs are joined as this product is mostly natural with just a touch of engineering. Another consideration is the amount of direct sunlight the end-product will receive, as continued exposure can cause some discoloration. The main difference in the two surfaces is the porousness of the granite, and the possibility of discoloration with the quartz. All in all, both materials are durable and attractive options, and in the end, the choice will come down to aesthetic preference.
